Birth in Australia is regulated by policies. Policies that are based on dated evidence, developed by people who often haven't experienced birthing within the system. Revolutionising maternity care also comes in the form of advocating for these policies to be reviewed, examined and updated.
The voices that need to be part of this conversation aren't those of regulatory bodies, financial & parliamentary institutions, or medical organisations. Using the voices of women, families, community members and organisations who are walking in these spaces every day is essential. We bring these voices into those rooms through formal submissions, coalition work, and steady presence at the table.
When possible, or required, to strengthen the collective voice, we collaborate with other consumer organisations.
In 2023/24 the NSW Government held a parliamentary inquiry into birth trauma.
After receiving over 4000 submissions to the inquiry this became an issue that could no longer be ignore.
Research shows that 1 in 3 women experience birth related trauma, 1 in 10 experience Obstetric Violence, and 1 in 25 to 1 in 10 experience PTSD as a result of their birth. What we also know from research is that 70% of birth trauma is iatrogenic - which is to say that it is caused at the hands of the care providers.
Following the inquiry, a report was handed down that included 43 Recommendations for the NSW government to action to address this widespread issue. Of which, only 1 recommendation has been fulfilled. Let that land. Since May 2024, 1 out of 43 Recommendations have been actioned.
We are dedicated to ensuring that the NSW government fulfils all of the promises made to women as a result of this inquiry.
We are collaborating with a number of consumer advocacy groups to launch a campaign for action to be taken ahead of the NSW parliamentary election in 2027.
Stay tuned for more info on this.
In January 2027, the choice to give birth at home could quietly disappear for thousands of Australian families. Most people have never even heard this is happening.
Hereโs the short version. If you plan a homebirth, you need two midwives present, one lead, and one โsecondโ for backup.
From 1 January 2027, a change to insurance rules means the only people who can legally fill that second role will be midwives with a specific extra qualification, and there are only 1,742 of them in the entire country.
1,742 people, for a role that needs to be filled at every single Homebirth in Australia.
This isnโt a safety upgrade. Thereโs no evidence it makes birth safer. Itโs an insurance gap thatโs about to take away a choice thousands of families are actively making right now!
For more information about this and the full background story, you can go to Homebirth Australia, one of our advocacy partners who articulate it really well.
What can you do now?
1. Follow our instagram for updates on what action you can take.
In August 2026, the Senate launched an inquiry into Women's Health with a focus on postpartum care. Submissions will be due on 9th October and the reporting date has been set for August next year.
We have a particular focus on postpartum care and believe that every woman and family deserves to be given appropriate care, support and nourishment.
Like we did for the birth trauma inquiry, we are supporting women, partners, families, community members and organisations to make their submission by the deadline.
For more information about this, please email [email protected] or click on the link below for more detailed information about making a submission.
