The Australian Senate has established a Select Committee on Womenโs Health. An important part of the inquiry is examining postpartum healthcare and womenโs physical, psychological, emotional and economic experiences after birth.
This is an opportunity for women to tell decision-makers what postpartum care was really like: what helped, what was missing, what caused harm, what was difficult to access and what needs to change.
Submissions close Friday 9 October 2026.
Your experience does not need to have been entirely negative or entirely positive. You may want to describe excellent care that should become more widely available, difficult care that needs to change, or a mixture of both.
You do not need to be a professional writer. A clear account of what happened, how it affected you and what you believe would improve postpartum care can make a valuable contribution.
We have tried to simplify the process of making a submission as much as possible. We have outlined a few ways you can make your submission. Below, you will see some tips, sentence starters, and ways of utilising our templates and team to support you in making your submission.
For your reference, the detailed list of issues that the Senate has promised to review and report on can be found at the bottom of this webpage.
You can choose to remain anonymous or have your details visible on the Inquiry portal
Every submission counts so each individual submission should come from your own email address to be counted as an individual response
You can simply email your submission to the Committee Secretariat [email protected] but if you do this your submission will not be private and it will be published on the internet. If you would like your submission to be private and read by the committee, but not published on the internet, please create an account and upload your submission here.
If you made a submission to the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Birth Trauma, and are reluctant to go through the same process, or re-tell your story, you can include your original submission. This is a Senate Inquiry, not a State Inquiry so it's still relevant to include again.
We have created a few easy pathways to support you to make a submission (see below) so you can make the deadline.
You can write your own and then head directly to the Senate Inquiry Portal to upload your own submission. Via the portal, you do have the option of remaining anonymous or having your name published.
You can download our 'done for you' template and follow the instructions to add in your personal touches. Then simply follow the link to the portal or email directly to: [email protected]
Please note that if you choose to email directly you will not be able to choose the anonymous option.
You can download a simple questionnaire that we have developed to help you organise your experience and recommendations. Use the questions that are relevant to you and delete anything you do not need. And then use the portal (link to the left) or email directly to: [email protected]
We understand that making your submission can be daunting. You may have limited time or capacity, still be navigating your postpartum journey, or be reluctant to re-live distressing or traumatic experiences. We are here to help you with that. We have a team of trauma-informed people who can hear your story, and support you to draft and finalise your submission and then guide you through the process of submitting it. If you would like this support, use the contact us button below and we can arrange this for you.
