Hygieia House

A Sanctuary for Mamatotos

Hygieia House is a sanctuary for Mamatotos and birthworkers, brought to you by Hygieia Health. Created as a dedicated space for women, families, practitioners, and community to gather, connect, learn, receive support, and honour the profound transitions of life.

Located in Nashua, Northern NSW, Hygieia House has been created as a nurturing and intentional environment for sessions, workshops, gatherings, ceremonies, practitioner offerings, and birth-related care.

More than simply a physical space, Hygieia House is a place created to support connection, belonging, and the sharing of wisdom, with a deep respect for the experiences and journeys of women, families, and community.

Hygieia House welcomes practitioners, educators, birth workers, facilitators, and community leaders whose offerings align with the vision and values of this space.

We welcome offerings that contribute to a culture of care, respect, empowerment, connection, and conscious support for women, families, babies, and community.

We recognise that each practitioner and facilitator brings their own unique experience, wisdom, and approach. Hygieia House honours diversity of practice while holding a shared commitment to the values and intention that guide this space.

Private Birthing Hospital

We are determined to create a new paradigm: a maternity hospital that can provide support to the majority (physiological, normal birth) and the minority (complicated or higher risk pregnancies). All this, while respecting women’s autonomy and choices every step of the way. Mums want the best for their babies, and we trust them. We believe that all women, with or without financial resources, should have access to this type of care.

We know that birth is best when women and families are in a safe and undisturbed environment so we aim to build a birthing hospital that is a sanctuary, where women can access holistic and woman-centred care including vaginal breech birth, birth after 2 caesarean sections and vaginal births in multiple pregnancies. We believe that however a woman experiences her pregnancy and birth, will influence all of her relationships (with herself, her baby, her partner/family and her community), as well as her ability to parent, especially in the early days. Providing socially and culturally respectful care will help to ensure physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing outcomes for the woman, her partner and their baby.

We plan to work closely with the Indigenous community to develop maternity services that are designed, developed, delivered and evaluated for, and with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women that is culturally aware, respectful and focussed.

Our sacred birthing hospital will be birthed into the world in 3 phases:

  • Phase 1: Birth Sanctuary (birth house/centre) for low risk women

  • Phase 2: All-risk birth centre, with homebirth program and collaboration with homebirth midwives

  • Phase 3: All-risk birthing hospital with obstetric care and services

We envisage bringing true holistic care services into our sanctuary so women have access to a range of birth-related services, including (but not limited to) complimentary therapies: naturopath, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, doula care, childbirth education, homebirth support, postnatal care, debriefing and counselling.

Our initial fundraising effort is here to support us to fund the development of a Health Service Plan that we can take to investors to support us. We are in the conception phase of this project and we are seeking your help… planning, lobbying, fundraising, and all that goes into it. We know we are dreaming big, and our motto is “Waiting until everything is feasible, is too long to wait.” So with a little help from everyone, we can do this and change the birthing landscape in Australia, for the benefit of the women birthing today but also our children and grandchildren.

Education & Support Services

Welcome to our website, where we are dedicated to providing education and resources to pregnant women, their families, and birth workers to reduce the incidence of birth trauma and its impact on both the mother and the baby. Our goal is to ensure that every birthing woman is equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to have a safe, empowering, and transformative birthing experience.

We understand that birth trauma can have long-lasting effects on both the mother and the baby, which is why we aim to offer a range of support services to those who have experienced birth trauma.

Our team of is here to offer support and resources to help them overcome the emotional and psychological effects of birth trauma.

At the heart of our mission is the prevention of birth trauma in Australia. We believe that understanding the impact of how one is born is crucial to reducing the incidence of birth trauma, not only for the mother but also for the baby. We focus on highlighting the causes of birth trauma, the impacts, and how birth workers can help reduce the incidence of birth trauma with this awareness.

Regrettably, research reveals that the treatment of women by birth workers during childbirth results in 70% of birth trauma. The root cause of this issue is often due to factors such as burnout, stress, and overwork. Such stress hinders one’s ability to provide care and support in a compassionate and respectful manner, which can lead to traumatic experiences for both the mother and the baby.

We aim to bring attention to this problem, hold birth workers accountable, and support them by providing better resources and education. We understand that birth workers must take care of themselves to provide optimal care to birthing mothers and babies. That’s why we are committed to assisting birth workers in healing from their own traumas, biases, and unconscious beliefs and behaviors.

We invite you to join us in our mission to reduce birth trauma and create a better future for mothers, babies, families, and birth workers in Australia. Together, we can ensure that every birthing woman and baby has a safe and positive birthing experience.

Gentle birth houses

Welcome to Hygieia Health, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to reducing and treating birth trauma. Our mission is to promote and advocate for private birth houses and home birth programs throughout Australia, with the ultimate objective of reducing birth trauma.

We believe that every woman has the right to give birth in a safe and empowering environment, with continuity of care and women-centred care being a top priority. That’s why we are dedicated to establishing a nationwide network of Gentle Birth Houses. These houses will offer a professional and home-like environment for women to give birth under the care of an endorsed midwife, ensuring continuity of care from pregnancy through to postpartum.

Our Gentle Birth Houses will provide midwifery-led care that is tailored to meet the unique needs of each woman. Women-centred midwifery care is essential for promoting the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of both the mother and baby. It recognizes the unique needs and preferences of each woman, and provides personalized care that is tailored to meet those needs. This approach to care empowers women to make informed decisions about their own health and the health of their baby, and it promotes greater satisfaction and a more positive birth experience. Ultimately, women-centred midwifery care plays a critical role in reducing the incidence of birth trauma, and ensuring that every woman has a safe and empowering birth experience.

Studies have shown that midwifery-led care is associated with better birth outcomes and fewer interventions, while also promoting greater satisfaction and a more positive birth experience for women. Our Gentle Birth Houses will provide the highest quality of midwifery-led care, ensuring that women are supported throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period.

By providing a more personalised and intimate birth experience, with the comfort of a home-like environment, and the highest standards of midwifery-led care, we believe that the establishment of Gentle Birth Houses will offer women a much-needed alternative to hospital birth. This will not only reduce the incidence of birth trauma, but also promote safer, personalised, and empowering birth experiences for all women.

Join us in our mission to reduce birth trauma, and promote safe, personalized, and empowering birth experiences for all women in Australia.
